KIDVILLE TO HOST AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH EVENT

Meredith Toddre, autism advocate and author, plans to host an educational question and answer session at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kidville, 420 S. Rampart Blvd., Suite 130, in Tivoli Village.

Toddre plans to read excerpts of her soon-to-be-published book, "The ABC’s of Autism." She is a parent to two children diagnosed with autism. A special performance by Kidville’s signature class, Rockin’ Railroad, is planned.

The question-and-answer session is scheduled from 3 to 4 p.m., to be followed by the Rockin’ Railroad concert from 4 to 4:30 p.m.

April is Autism Awareness Month. As an extension of Kidville’s support of autism awareness, a portion of the store proceeds, purchased from Monday through April 29, will be donated to the nonprofit organization Autism Coalition of Nevada.

MAD MUD RUN AND MUDPUPPY SPLASH SET FOR SATURDAY AT KNICKERBOCKER PARK

The Mad Mud Run and Mudpuppy Splash for kids is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at Knickerbocker Park, 10695 W. Dorrell Lane in the Providence community.

Pre-event check-in is scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the REI store in Boca Park, 710 S. Rampart Blvd.

Test yourself on the four-mile, action-packed course with boot camp-style activities, such as a belly crawl, balance beams, a water wall, a tire array, hay bales and the 40-foot-long mud pit.

The minimum age to participate is 12. For those under 18, special waivers are required. The cost is $60 per adult. The 100-meter Mudpuppy Splash is open for children for $15 per child.

New and gently used books will be collected for Spread the Word Nevada.

GET OUTDOORS NEVADA PLANS EARTH DAY ACTIVITIES THIS WEEKEND

Get Outdoors Nevada plans to host volunteer activities for Earth Day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on Mount Charleston.

Saturday will include litter removal in the area. Sunday will have volunteers restoring a decommissioned road so it blends into the natural environment.

Participants should wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. They should also bring sunscreen, snacks and water. To sign up and get directions, call the Friends of Nevada Wilderness at 839-5569.

AMERICAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF GERMANS FROM RUSSIA TO MEET

The American Historical Society of Germans from Russia plans to host a general meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday at Atria Sunlake, 3250 S. Fort Apache Road.

The society is a genealogical group studying ancestors descended from Germans who migrated to Russia and lived along the Volga River and in the Black Sea area. Their migration to the United States began in the late 1800s. The April meeting topic concerns family stories of members who are first-generation Americans.

TRAVEL CLUB TO MEET AT TAP HOUSE

The Las Vegas Single Social and Travel Club for Mature Adults plans its next meeting for 7 p.m. April 24 at the Tap House, 5589 W. Charleston Blvd.

The meet-and-greet portion is set to start at 6:30 p.m. Meeting discussions focus on day trips, local events, in-state and out-of-state traveling, cruises and international traveling. BRANDEIS NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO MEET

The Brandeis National Committee, Las Vegas Chapter plans to host its general meeting at 11:30 a.m. April 26 at the Jewish Community Center, 9001 Hillpointe Road.

The guest speaker is scheduled to be Dane S. Claussen, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union. There also will be an election of officers for the fiscal 2012-13 year.

The cost of the luncheon, catered by Spiedini, is $14. Proceeds are dedicated to the BNC Las Vegas Chapter Endowed Scholarship Fund.

SOLAR ECLIPSE TO BE TOPIC

An Astronomy in the Park Star Party is planned for 6 p.m. April 28 at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area’s Group Use area.

The evening is set to begin with views of the moon and Jupiter just after sunset, followed by deep-sky viewing of galaxies, nebulae and star clusters as the sky darkens. The presentation will be "Understanding Eclipses," as the club prepares to observe the annular solar eclipse May 20. A laser-guided tour of the night sky is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

DEVIL PUP LEADERSHIP MEETING PLANNED

An informational meeting for prospective Devil Pups and their parents is planned for noon Saturday at the Leatherneck Club, 4360 W. Spring Mountain Road. The Devil Pups program trains teens 14 to 17 on Saturday mornings in preparation for a 10-day leadership and physical fitness training program at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base. COTTONWOOD VALLEY NIGHT HIKE

SET FOR MONDAY

The Cottonwood Valley Star and Meteor Hike is planned for 6 p.m. Monday in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The moderate four-mile hike will take place on the tail end of the Lyrid Meteor Shower. Learn the stories of several popular constellations.

Guests 12 or older are welcome and are asked to bring a flashlight.

TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION NEEDS INPUT FROM RESIDENTS

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada is continuing to hold community outreach events and public hearings until May 17 to discuss the transit fare adjustments proposed by the Fare Working Group to address fiscal challenges. A 60-day public comment period is in effect to obtain community input about the fare recommendations before any decisions are made. The recommendations include modifications to transit fares for the residential market, resort corridor and ADA Paratransit service.

The public is encouraged to attend upcoming public outreach sessions to learn more about the fare proposals: 4 to 6 p.m. May 1 at Albertsons, 4850 W. Craig Road; 5 to 7 p.m. May 4 at Albertsons, 2575 S. Maryland Parkway; and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 9 at the Centennial Hills Transit Center, 7313 Grand Montecito Parkway.

In addition, the transportation commission plans to host two public hearings on the proposals: 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bonneville Transit Center, 101 E. Bonneville Ave.; and 3 to 5 p.m. May 12 at the Bonneville Transit Center, 101 E. Bonneville Ave.
