WEEK IN REVIEW: Reporters’ notebook

When the Nevada Department of Wildlife rounded up bighorn sheep in Boulder City’s Hemenway Park recently, crew members ran across a few old friends: three ewes that were caught and tagged in the very same park in 2010.

The animals looked healthy, according to Peregrine Wolff, a veterinarian who took part in the capture earlier this month and in the one two years ago.

“It was fun to see them again,” Wolff said. “They kind of went by and flipped us the hoof.”

The knock against most solar power plants is that they only work during the day, and that is certainly true at the new Silver State North Project 50 miles south of Las Vegas. Mostly true, anyway.

While the photovoltaic array does not send any electricity to the power grid at night, it does continue to collect and convert photons from sunlight even after sundown. On a clear night, the panels can absorb enough of the light reflected off the moon to deliver a serious jolt to anyone who might be working on them.

It’s a safety issue, said Alan Bernheimer, spokesman for the company that builds the solar panels. “They’re always live.”

Lana Hammond, business license manager for the city of North Las Vegas, can easily name the weirdest license request she has ever seen.

“A man tried to get a business license for female mud wrestling,” she said, “and classify it as a female fitness center.”

TWEET OF THE WEEK: @carney (CNBC financial blogger John Carney) If I didn’t have Mother’s day plans with my mom I’d be less freaked out about being stuck in Vegas.

BONUS TWEET: @NPsteve (Steve Murray, cartoonist and columnist for Canada’s National Post newspaper) I’m furious that Obama is trying to destroy the sanctity of my 6-month Vegas marriage from ten years ago.
