Laxalt bringing ‘AG for a Day’ to Southern Nevada

Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt is stealing his grandpa’s idea and taking his office on a tour across the state.
The Laxalt tradition dates back to November 1968, when then-Gov. Paul Laxalt created the “Capital for a Day” tour.
Laxalt wasn’t even born when his grandfather embarked on his tour, but nearly 40 years later, the state’s top law enforcement officer is using the same model to connect with rural and tribal communities and hear their concerns.
The “AG for a Day” tour launched in Northern Nevada’s small towns last week, starting about 60 miles east of Reno in Fallon. Next week the tour is hitting up several small towns in Southern Nevada.
After presentations on various topics, including scams and consumer fraud, domestic violence, and guardianship and elder abuse, Laxalt and his staff will listen to the concerns of residents and be on hand to respond.
Laxalt told the Review-Journal on Monday that communities across the state are increasingly worried about scams and financial fraud. His office’s new financial fraud unit has even received referrals on new fraud cases as part of the tour.
“We knew there was an uptick (in fraud cases),” he said. “People need these resources.”
Other communities had other concerns: In Ely, federal overreach and ranchers’ issues were a hot topic.
In Elko, Laxalt had a striking moment. One woman, whose daughter was killed in a domestic violence incident, stood and led a frank discussion on the issue along with the attorney general’s new domestic violence ombudsmen, he said.
“She brought a picture of her daughter,” he said. “I was very moved.”
Laxalt didn’t say when asked if the trip was laying the groundwork for his own run at the governor’s mansion.
“We pledged to work hard and make a difference with this office, and I think we do,” he said.
If you’re looking to connect with Laxalt’s office, the “AG for a Day” tour picks up at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Mesquite City Council chambers.
