1 dead after being struck by car near downtown Las Vegas

A 57-year-old man standing at the corner of a downtown Las Vegas intersection may have suffered a medical episode before he was fatally struck by a truck Tuesday afternoon.

The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the 2:55 p.m. crash involving one pedestrian and a box truck at North Main Street and West Owens Avenue.

Witnesses at the scene told Metro investigators that the man appeared to have “fainted or passed out” before “falling forward into the street,” Metro Lt. CJ Jenkins said. The man fell into a northbound travel lane on Main Street just as a box truck was passing, landing “in the path of the rear wheels of the truck,” he said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Ford F750 box truck’s driver stayed on scene and showed no signs of impairment, police said. The intersection was closed for about four hours Tuesday while police investigated.

The county coroner’s office will name the pedestrian and determine his cause of death once his family has been notified.
