GIRLS BASKETBALL: Samantha Thomas’ late basket lifts No. 2 Centennial by No. 6 Chaminade

Samantha Thomas’ stick-back basket with nine seconds to play allowed Centennial’s girls basketball team to pull out a 66-64 win over Chaminade (Calif.) in a battle of nationally-ranked teams Saturday in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Gilbert, Ariz.

Justice Ethridge had 13 points, and Bailey Thomas and Samantha Thomas each scored 12 for the Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 2 nationally by USA Today.

Duke commit Leaonna Odom scored 23 points, and Southern California commit Valerie Higgins had 18 points for Chaminade, ranked No. 6 by USA Today.

Coronado 46, Barrow (Alaska) 43 — At Wasilla, Alaska, Haley Tyrell scored 16 points, and the Cougars overcame an early deficit to top the Whalers in the Doc Larson Roundball Classic.

Payton Caci and Tia Thornton each added eight points for Coronado, which trailed 11-4 after one quarter.

Rose Mongoyak and Kuutuuq Danner each had 10 points for Barrow.

Lincoln County 64, The Meadows 15 — At Panaca, Savannah Harr had 16 points and 10 assists, and the Lynx began the game on a 35-0 run en route to an easy win over the Mustangs.

Easton Tingey added 15 points, and Kristal Jackson scored 12 for Lincoln County, which got 11 points from Brynlee Wadsworth.

Tahsin Najmi led The Meadows with eight points.

White Pine 66, Calvary Chapel 14 — At Ely, Debra Kingston had 15 points, and the Bobcats sprinted to a 45-9 halftime lead in a rout of the Lions.

Malia Lee had 12 points for Calvary Chapel.
