FOOTBALL: Broady roars for Sierra Vista

Sierra Vista running back Maliek Broady (31) runs through a tackle by Clark’s Brendon ...

There wasn’t much to speak of when it came to defense or special teams Thursday night at Sierra Vista High School.

Maliek Broady, on the other hand, put on an offensive show that more than made up for those shortcomings.

The senior running back carried 17 times for 314 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Mountain Lions to a 54-34 victory over visiting Clark.

“He’s an explosive kid,” Sierra Vista coach John Foss said of Broady. “He gets going downhill right away, and tonight he got some wide-open runs.”

The Chargers (3-3, 2-2 Division I-A Sunset) made it easy for the Lions (5-1, 3-1) in the first quarter, committing three turnovers that led to 14 points. Broady capped the quarter with a 13-yard scoring run to give his team a 21-0 lead.

After Clark opened the second quarter with TD runs by Ty’Rek Wells and Marquise Stuart, Broady answered with a 75-yard sprint through the defensive line and up the middle to extend the Lions’ lead to 28-12. He added three long TD runs in the second half.

The Chargers, who turned the ball over three times in the game’s first nine minutes, finished with three fumbles and two interceptions.

“That was important,” Foss said. “But they overcame their mistakes and kept the score close.”

Clark got within 40-34 after quarterback Nick Kinnard had a 3-yard scoring run late in the third and another with 8:36 left in the fourth, but Broady put the game out of reach with his late TDs.

“The most important thing tonight was that when things got close, we fought through,” Foss said. “We found a way to win.”

Andrew Peterson carried 10 times for 141 yards and two TDs to help the Lions.

Kinnard rushed 13 times for 49 yards to lead the Chargers, and he completed 12 of 20 passes for 169 yards and a TD.

Another muffed punt return by Las Vegas in the second quarter led to Trejo’s 1-yard touchdown run that pushed the lead to 20-0. Trejo had 17 carries for 71 yards, including a second touchdown run of 11 yards in the third quarter for Coronado.

An interception by Aaron Cotton – and a 52 yard return of the pick to the Wildcat 20 – set up Farella’s 1-yard TD pass to Justin Belknap with 0:11 left before half time.
