ROUNDUP: Agassi Prep’s Kemp shows strength in rout of Laughlin

Agassi Prep appears to have a potent rushing attack led by senior running back DeVonn Porter this season.

The emergence of quarterback Terrell Kemp could make the Stars a playoff contender.

Kemp threw five first-half touchdown passes to lead Agassi Prep to a 58-0 rout of Laughlin in both teams’ Class 2A Southern League opener Friday night at Rancho.

The junior completed 6 of 7 passes for 129 yards, with all five of his TD tosses coming in the first half. His only incompletion was a dropped pass.

“I don’t have the words to describe how pleased I am with (Kemp’s) performance,” Agassi Prep coach Colt Goodman said. “He’s a threat on his feet as well as throwing the ball.”

Kemp hooked up with senior receiver LeShaun Sims on TD passes of 26, 22 and 41 yards in the first quarter, and the duo added a 12-yard strike in the second. He also found Curtis Watson for a 27-yard scoring strike to help the Stars (1-1) to a 42-0 halftime lead.

Sims, who also scored on a 17-yard run in the fourth quarter, caught four passes for 101 yards.

“LeShaun, he’s more of a defensive player,” Kemp said. “But today, he showed he’s an offensive player.
“We just did what we had to do in the passing game.”

Porter carried 11 times for 113 yards for Agassi Prep, which outgained Laughlin 358-8. The Cougars (2-1) had 10 plays go for negative yardage.

“I think we made a statement tonight,” Goodman said. “We’ve been on the other side of that number for a few years. This team has finally matured.”

Playing its first season at the 2A level, Laughlin was down to 13 active players following an injury delay of more than 25 minutes in the second quarter.

Laughlin quarterback Andre Prosise suffered an apparent neck injury early in the second quarter. The senior moved his arms and legs while lying on the ground as his neck was held in place by an athletic trainer. Prosise was eventually carted off the field on a stretcher and left in an ambulance.

Laughlin coach Jason Leonard said Prosise had movement in his extremities and was taken away in the ambulance as a precautionary measure.
