Outlook: The Patriots struggled for much of last season and are young this year with the players expected to lead the team all juniors or sophomores.

"These girls have the attitude that they hate to lose more than they like to win," Portese said. "Workouts have been upbeat as they hold each other accountable when mistakes are made.

"These girls know mistakes are a part of the game, but what is their attitude, and how do they respond after the play? They understand that concept and apply it during practice.

"The goal this year is to make the playoffs."
