Bishop Gorman’s Vashti Cunningham, shown during the 2014 Division I state track and field championships, set a national high school record in the girls high jump Saturday at the Mt. Bishop Gorman junior Vashti Cunningham was named the Gatorade Nevada Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.
Cunningham set a national record in the high jump this spring, clearing 6 feet, 4¼ inches at the Mt. SAC Relays in California.
Cunningham failed to clear a height in the event at the Division I state meet, but came back to win the long jump with a mark of 19-2½.
That jump was the best in Nevada this year.
Cunningham won both events at the Sunset Region meet, clearing 6-4 in the high jump and posting a mark of 17-5 in the long jump.
