A-Rod connects with old friend

New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez got cozy the other night with an old friend who enthusiastically campaigned earlier this year for the local title of “most likely to be involved in a celebrity sex scandal.”

Nightlife event promoter Tiffany Masters, who operates, in her words, companies that put beautiful women in nightclubs “for energy,” confirmed on Saturday that she was in Rodriguez’ company Thursday at Haze nightclub at Aria.

“We are just friends,” said Masters, whose companies Arm Charms and Cabana Candy have been characterized as “legitimate escort services.”

“We were just hanging out, sipping champagne, catching up on some old memories,” she said.

In 2006, Masters was voted among the 20 most beautiful people in Las Vegas on JackColton.com, a popular nightlife resource website.

She was described as “a popular nightlife columnist, successful event promoter, and celebrity VIP host.” She has written an adult entertainment column but denies she’s ever been involved in the porn industry. She is often linked socially with Kalika Moquin, whose name came up during the Tiger Woods’ infidelity scandal, and Miss Nevada USA Katie Rees, who was dethroned after scandalous photos surfaced.

Masters has often been seen on the arm of celebrity blogger Robin Leach, who has featured her in his blog, and reported on Friday that she was “gettingcloserthanthis” with Rodriguez at Haze.

Last July she encouraged her fans to vote for her in Colton’s nightclub industry awards in the category of “most likely to be involved in a celebrity sex scandal.”

ON THIS DAY …

Forty years ago today President Richard Nixon came to town, praising Las Vegas as “a miracle city of the West.”

Nixon, here to boost Bill Raggio’s bid for the U.S. Senate, arrived at the Hughes Air Terminal where a protestor waved a “Nixon, go home” sign, which was quickly yanked out of his hand.

According to an account in the Review-Journal, Nixon told a crowd of about 9,000 in the rotunda of the Convention Center that the Vietnam protests were coming from “a radical few on TV” who “are not a majority and they won’t be our leaders of tomorrow.

“I ask you young people not to lose faith with this country.”

Days later, 30-year-old Harry Reid became the youngest lieutenant governor in Nevada history, winning election as Gov. Mike O’Callaghan’s running mate.

Reid’s U.S. Senate opponent on Tuesday, Sharron Angle, had just gotten married during her senior year of college in 1970.

A 31-year-old named Oscar Goodman was on the brink of making a name for himself as a defense attorney for some infamous Las Vegas mobsters.

THE SCENE AND HEARD

A young man waving his cowboy hat approached the stage Oct. 22 during Garth Brooks’ show at Wynn Las Vegas. Brooks acknowledged him and engaged him in conversation. The young fan gave his name as Fred, age 22, and appeared to have learning/maturity disabilities. When he asked Brooks if he would sign his cowboy hat, the country legend responded that he hated to “ruin such a good hat.” With that, Brooks removed his guitar, took Fred’s felt-tip marker, signed it for him and handed it over. …
