Air Force: Bases inject $5 billion

The Air Force is calculating the economic benefit of the Nellis and Creech bases to the Southern Nevada economy at more than $5 billion.

A report released Tuesday covers October 2007 through September 2008 and shows the two bases pumping 4 percent more, about $208 million, into the regional economy over the same period a year earlier.

The report calls the bases the second-largest employer in Clark County, with nearly 13,000 active-duty military, Air National Guard, Reserve, and civilian employees.

Just the payroll is almost $922 million.

Nellis is a top Air Force combat training base. Creech, in Indian Springs, is home to a squadron operating Predator and Reaper unmanned aircraft over Iraq and Afghanistan.
