Charges added against man jailed in metal thefts

RENO — More charges have been filed against a man accused of stealing scrap metal from a Verdi business and recycling it for cash.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that 56-year-old Timothy Alsum has been jailed since October. On Tuesday, Alsum was booked on an additional 18 counts of burglary, 16 counts of obtaining money under false pretenses and 15 counts of possession of stolen property.

Washoe County sheriff’s detectives are trying to calculate total losses.

But authorities say they’ve attributed more than $30,000 in stolen metals to Alsum’s alleged thefts at the business between November 2010 and Oct. 1.

Law enforcement officers call metal thieves “scrappers” because they steal scrap metal and then pawn it for money at recycling centers.
