County election results certified

Results for the local general election and its record turnout were made official Wednesday.

After Clark County staff spent a week reviewing the votes, the commission certified the election results that will go to the secretary of state.

Last week’s election went smoothly, with 652,000 residents casting ballots. The turnout eclipsed the 547,000 people who voted in the 2004 presidential election, said Larry Lomax, the county registrar of voters.

About 80 percent of registered voters participated in this year’s general election, the same percentage as in 2004. The higher number of voters reflected a growth in population in the past four years.

A total of 232 mistakes were found, nearly all of them clerical gaffes such as voters listed at the wrong precincts, he said.

No votes were miscast, Lomax said.

“The doomsayers were wrong as far as Clark County goes,” he said.

Election Day was less busy and chaotic at the polls, and less prone to errors thanks to 390,000 residents voting early, Lomax said.
