Day care murder retrial postponed

A day care worker set to go on trial this week for the 1997 death of a young girl had her trial postponed today.
District Judge Michelle Leavitt postponed the trial of Alica Wegner because one of the defendant’s attorneys had a family emergency.

Leavitt dismissed the jury, which was chosen last week. The trial was expected to last three to four weeks.

No new date has yet been set for the trial.

Wegner, 44, is facing a retrial on murder charges. She is accused of killing 14-month-old Kierra Harrison, a girl who authorities said was injured in Wegner’s care.

Wegner was convicted of the murdering Kierra in 1998 and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years.

The Nevada Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 2000 and granted her a new trial because of improper jury instructions.
