Disown the “dislike” button

Attention Facebook fanatics, there’s a new scam in town. And, much like its many predecessors, the scam looks legit, but isn’t. Following the bogus instructions could result in malicious software (that’s never good) being installed on your computer.

I’m talking about an invitation to add a "dislike" button to your Facebook interface. Some of you have likely encountered it already. But it isn’t real. Don’t click on, forward, read, probe or act on anything that promises to add the much-asked-for-but-not-yet-delivered dislike button.

An AFP story on Yahoo says: "Hackers are enticing Facebook users to install an application pitched as a "dislike" button that jokingly notifies contacts at the social networking service "now I can dislike all of your dumb posts."

Perhaps someday the tweakers at Facebook will add a legitimate "dislike" button. But, for now, if you dislike something, you’re left to type the word "dislike" as a comment to a wall post or status update.

Now, share this with all your Facebook friends. All 500 million-plus out there need to beware this scam.
