Former Rancho High star Hollins to become head coach of NBA’s Grizzlies
Lionel Hollins is working on a contract with the Memphis Grizzlies to serve as their head coach for the third time — but the first time without the interim label.
Memphis general manager Chris Wallace confirmed Friday that he hoped to reach an agreement this weekend with Hollins, who starred at Rancho High School before moving on to Arizona State and the NBA.
Hollins, an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks, would replace Marc Iavaroni, who was fired Thursday. Assistant Johnny Davis will be the interim coach until Hollins’ arrival.
Hollins, who graduated from Rancho in 1971, went 18-46 as the interim coach during the 1999-2000 and 2004-05 seasons. He flew with the Bucks to Atlanta for their game with the Hawks on Friday night, then left the team.
“We’re sad he’s leaving, but it’s just such a great opportunity for him,” Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles said. “His family’s there. He’s comfortable.”
