Frontier life for teachers, more mild than wild
“Education in the Neon Shadow, the first 50 years of the Clark County School District,” newly published by Stephens Media, is full of archival photos and rare documents found during the celebration of the school district’s 50th anniversary in 2006.
A poem called “The way it was, rules for Nevada teachers,” is a reminder of how much scrutiny teachers were under when Las Vegas was a small frontier town in the early 1900s.
Teachers were to do “janitorial service and keep the schoolhouse neat and clean,” they were to register nonpartisan and avoid political involvement and “remain in town on weekends unless given permission to leave by the school board.”
