Snow predicted this weekend in mountains

Two feet of snow is expected in the Mount Charleston area this weekend.

Police and weather officials are warning people who plan to travel in the Spring Mountains to be aware of possible traffic restrictions because of snow.

The National Weather Service in Las Vegas expects the bulk of the snow to reach the mountain area Saturday. Meteorologist Chris Stachelski predicted the biggest snowfall of the year.

Four-wheel drive vehicles or snow chains will be required beginning at the snow line on state routes 156, 157 and 160. Signs will be displayed if the restrictions are imposed.

In the valley, a chance of rain is predicted for Saturday and Sunday morning, with temperatures dropping to the low to mid-50s.

Gang member gets prison in slaying

A gang member was sentenced Thursday to life in prison for fatally shooting a 19-year-old man at a Halloween party in 2007.

Edward Walker Jr., 21, pleaded guilty in December to second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the slaying of Jamal Hill. Walker shot Hill at a party in North Las Vegas.

“I take full responsibility for what I did,” Walker said Thursday in District Court.

District Judge Michael Villani imposed the sentence, which includes the possibility of parole after 10 years.

Police make arrests in firefighter hoax

Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with posing as Clark County firefighters and stealing two flat-screen TVs from an apartment complex gym in January.

The suspects, Jay Campanile and William Moyer, were caught on surveillance video wearing firefighter garb and carrying radios while stealing the TVs from an apartment complex near Flamingo Road and Cambridge Street Jan. 9, police said.

The men are not employed by the Clark County Fire Department.

NLV police seek information in robbery

North Las Vegas police are searching for a getaway car used in a Jan. 21 armed robbery in which the suspects claimed to be police officers.

The car is a grey Ford coupe with California license plate: 4UTU793.

Police said four people followed a woman home from her work. Before they robbed her, they claimed they were officers. They did not wear uniforms or show credentials.

Police did not disclose what was stolen from the woman.

The four suspects were all Hispanic, police said.

One male suspect is described as about age 30, 5 foot 8 inches tall and about 130 pounds. He has a thin build and a mole between his right eye and nose. Another male suspect is about 40, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 170 pounds. A third suspect is described as a heavy-set man who is about 35.

Police said a red-haired woman, about 30, 5 feet tall and 130 pounds, also participated in the robbery.

Henderson fire causes $400,000 damage

A Henderson family awoke Thursday to barking dogs and flames ripping through their home near Valle Verde Drive and Osborne Lane.

Fire and smoke were rising from the home at 2:10 a.m. when firefighters arrived.

Although the cause of the fire at 2309 Richard Drive is under investigation, damages were estimated to be $400,000.

Accident leaves Arizona man dead

A northwest Arizona resident was killed Wednesday when pinned beneath the motorcycle and sidecar he was operating.

The victim will not be named until family is notified.

A Mohave County sheriff’s spokeswoman said the man was returning home some 20 miles north of Kingman when the accident occurred.

FIRST-DEGREE MURDER

Prison ordered in shooting death in LV

A 39-year-old man convicted of first-degree murder was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The jury sentenced Dennis Grigsby during the penalty phase of his trial. He was convicted of the April 2 shooting death of Anthony George Davis, 42, on the 2000 block of Nellis Boulevard near Lake Mead Boulevard.

At the time of the slaying, Grigsby’s estranged wife was living with Davis.
