IN BRIEF

RALLY SET

Cabdrivers to protest excessive competition

Fed up with a large number of taxicabs working on the Strip, Las Vegas cabbies plan to rally Monday night.

The rally is being led by Alliance, an organization for taxi and limousine drivers. It will begin at 6 p.m. in front of the Fashion Show mall.

Las Vegas cabdrivers have long held that there are too many competing taxis for a driver to make a decent amount of money.

LAS VEGAS BOULEVARD

12-year-old on bicycle struck, killed by pickup

A boy riding his bicycle was killed Wednesday evening when he was struck by a pickup.

Twelve-year-old Edwin Toby Torrez was riding his bike across Las Vegas Boulevard at Baltimore Avenue with an 11-year-old boy riding on the handlebars, police said.

Daniel Ash, 40, was stopped at a red light as he was headed north on Las Vegas Boulevard.

The light turned green and the boys crossed despite the pedestrian stop signal. Ash could not stop his truck in time and struck the bicycle.

Both boys were taken to University Medical Center where Edwin was pronounced dead and the 11-year-old was treated for moderate injuries.

CALIFORNIA HOTEL

Man wanted in 1983 slaying arrested in LV

A man wanted in California in a slaying a quarter-century ago was arrested Thursday by Las Vegas police.

Police said they apprehended Arnulfo Zuniga, 55, who was wanted on a warrant in the 1983 slaying of a man in Sun Valley, Calif.

The Los Angeles Police Department had given local police information earlier in the year that Zuniga was in Southern Nevada, Las Vegas police said.

After Zuniga’s arrest, numerous documents of false identification were recovered, documents believed to have helped him avoid arrest in the cold case, police said. Zuniga’s false documents show that he was going by the name Antonio Mendoza-Gonzalez.

Zuniga is accused of shooting the victim at a California hotel. Los Angeles police believe he then fled to Mexico. Zuniga was in the Clark County Detention Center on Thursday evening.
