RIFLE FIRED FROM VAN

Reno 17-year-old sentenced to prison for drive-by shooting

A 17-year-old from Reno has been sentenced to 12 years to life in prison for a drive-by gang slaying that authorities say he committed last August with his older brother at the wheel.

Antonio Cardenas apologized Monday to the family of 16-year-old Michael Vega, who was killed when Cardenas opened the sliding door of a van and opened fire with an assault rifle into a group of rival gang members in a McDonald’s restaurant parking lot.

Cardenas said he didn’t know Vega, and only meant to scare the group.

Washoe District Judge Janet Berry imposed the sentence after a jury found Cardenas guilty March 20 of second-degree murder.

Cardenas’ brother, 18-year-old Luis Cardenas, faces trial next month.
