Teacher accused of having sex with student dismissed

Jennifer Gardel, the Las Vegas High School theater and Spanish teacher accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student, is no longer employed with the Clark County School District as of Wednesday, a district spokesman said.

Gardel, 30, is charged with six counts of felony misconduct with a student. The two had sex in her classroom, a theater sound booth and her home, according to police reports. The two also exchanged explicit text messages.

She was originally hired in August of 2007. Last year, Gardel earned $45,622, according to district payroll records.

Man sentenced to 20 years in television argument killing

It started with an argument over the sale of a flat screen television. It ended with a 25-year-old man dead and his killer sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Mathew Beard in March pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter with a deadly weapon for the December death of Guy Holloway.

Beard was sentenced Thursday by District Judge Douglas Herndon. According to the sentence, Beard would be eligible for parole after a minimum of eight years.

Beard was originally charged with murder with a deadly weapon.

According to police, Beard and Holloway were arguing about the sale of the TV inside an apartment in the 7200 block of Las Vegas Boulevard South, near Warm Springs Road.

The argument turned physical and Beard stabbed Holloway, authorities said.

Inmate who shot four inside LV casino died of heart attack

The 54-year-old man convicted of shooting four people inside the New York-New York casino in 2007 died of a heart attack, authorities said.

Capt. Scott Henroid of the White Pine County Sheriff’s Office said Steven Zegrean died of "acute cardiac arrest" at 9:31 a.m. April 29.

He was serving a 90-year sentence at Ely State Prison for the shooting.

In July, a jury convicted Zegrean of more than 30 felonies, including multiple counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon.

Zegrean, who emigrated from Hungary more than 20 years ago, told investigators after the shooting that he had hoped he would be killed by police.

Hit by car

Coroner identifies man killed while crossing Flamingo Road

A pedestrian killed early Thursday morning when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street was identified as 57-year-old James Crevelt of Las Vegas, according to the Clark County coroner’s office.

Las Vegas police said Crevelt was crossing Flamingo Road outside the crosswalk, near El Oro Street, from the south to the north when he was struck by a 2004 Hyundai Elantra, driven by a 71-year-old man.

He was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The accident remains under investigation. No charges against the driver have been filed.

Miami woman who died after being hit by two vehicles ID’d

A Miami woman killed last week after being struck by two vehicles while crossing the street was identified Thursday by the Clark County coroner’s office as 35-year-old Deidra Calvert.

Las Vegas police said the accident occurred about 6 p.m. May 6 at Sands Avenue just south of Wynn Las Vegas. Calvert was crossing the street illegally by not walking within a marked crosswalk, police said.

Police said she was crossing Sands from north to south when she was struck by a 2007 Dodge Ram truck.

Immediately after the impact, the woman was struck by an unknown white SUV, police said.

The driver of the SUV stopped for a short time before leaving the scene.

Calvert was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Honolulu man dies after crashing car into a tree

A Honolulu man was killed early Thursday after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree, according to Las Vegas police.

The accident happened at 2:40 a.m. on Warm Springs Road near Windy Street, police said. The 41-year-old man, whom police did not identify, was driving a 2010 Suzuki SX4 east on Warm Springs when, for unknown reasons, crossed the intersection and struck a palm tree .
