Driver arrested in death of 77-year-old pedestrian

A man suspected of drunken driving was arrested Saturday night after striking and killing a man who was jaywalking on Fremont Street near Charleston Boulevard.

Las Vegas police said the victim, an unidentified 77-year-old man, was crossing Fremont from east to west between Atlantic Street and Oakey Boulevard. He was not in a marked crosswalk.

Eduardo Mendez, 38, was heading south on Fremont and ran over the man in the right lane at 8:11 p.m., police said. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mendez was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and booked into the Las Vegas Detention Center, records show.

County clerk quits to run for post she is leaving

The White Pine County clerk is resigning so she can focus on a summer-long campaign to be elected to the job she is quitting.

JoAnn Malone’s resignation is effective June 11. She is running against one of her workers, Lin Burleigh.

Burleigh’s entry into the race came as a surprise to Malone.

Seven months earlier, Malone had asked her staff of four whether anyone was interested in running. She said nobody expressed interest.

But on the last day of filing, Burleigh told the then-uncontested Malone she would be running against her.

Downtown businesses suffer damage during rights march

Close to 20 businesses were damaged after an immigrants’ rights march in downtown Santa Cruz, Calif., turned violent, requiring police to call other agencies for help, authorities said.

Police spokesman Zach Friend said an estimated 250 people started marching through the city about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

But some in the crowd started breaking windows and spraying paint on retail shops that line the downtown corridor. Friend said he was unsure whether the damage was caused by people marching in support of immigrants’ rights or whether the group was "infiltrated by anarchists."
