Korean War event to honor U.S. troops
More than 1,000 Korean War veterans will mark the 60th anniversary of the war during a reunion beginning Sunday at The Orleans.
The two-day reunion, sponsored by Friends of American Veterans of the Korean War and a consortium of Korean society and community groups, is planned as an “appreciation event” for U.S. troops who “sacrificed so much for a people they hardly knew.”
“We want them to know that ‘we will always remember,’Â ” said Steven Kwon, one of the organizers.
During the event, Harry S. Truman will be recognized as the president “who acted quickly and decisively to support Korea, for without his action the Republic of Korea would likely not exist today,” Kwon said.
“All Korean War veterans are welcome to come,” Kwon said.
He said veterans will also reflect on the 46 sailors who died when the republic’s warship, Cheonan, was sunk by a torpedo near North Korea on March 26.
On Monday, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Korean War veterans will tell their “unforgettable” stories,” according to the event’s agenda.
