Man struck, killed by train northeast of Las Vegas
A man was killed early Wednesday morning after being struck by a train in a rural area northeast of Las Vegas, between the city and Moapa.
According to a Union Pacific railroad spokesman, a male pedestrian was trespassing around the tracks and was struck shortly after 6 a.m.
The freight train was headed east from Los Angeles to Illinois.
It typically takes freight trains more than a mile to stop, according to Union Pacific, making it difficult for operators to avoid collisions with people or objects on tracks.
The railroad company says the incident is under investigation.
The train crew has been relieved of duty and put into a counseling program.
