Coast Guard, Navy searching for plane missing from South Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Coast Guard and the Navy are searching for a twin-engine plane missing on a flight from South Carolina to the Bahamas.

The Coast Guard said in a news release that the Piper PA 31 was reported missing around 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The Jacksonville, Florida, Air Traffic Control Center had received a report of an emergency on the plane about 110 miles east of Charleston.

The plane took off from an airport in Andrews in Georgetown County. There was no word on how many people were on the plane.

The Coast Guard has two cutters and aircraft from the Elizabeth City, North Carolina, air station searching. A Navy P-3 Orion plane is also helping.

The Federal Aviation Administration will not release information about the plane’s owner until it is found.
