The St. Louis area braced for another day of protests on Tuesday after a grand jury cleared a white police officer in the fatal August shooting of an unarmed black teenager, sparking a night of violent and racially charged rioting. Violent protests broke out in Missouri following the grand jury’s decision not to indict a white police officer who fatally shot an unarmed, black teenager on August 9, 2014.
Thousands waited in the streets across the U.S. and in Ferguson on Monday, and responded with shouts of anger, smashing windows and setting fire to businesses and cars. When daylight broke, about a dozen businesses had been severely damaged or destroyed.
Here’s what has happened so far:
61 arrests made in Ferguson overnight — most burglary/trespassing
21 arrests made in St. Louis — property damage
14 people with protest-related injuries in St. Louis
Hundreds of gunshots heard
