Kingman police officer shoots, kills woman brandishing shotgun

KINGMAN, Ariz. — A Kingman woman who police said pointed a shotgun at an officer was shot and killed in this northwest Arizona community Monday.

The deceased was identified as Paula Dell Phillips, 35.

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an independent investigation of the officer-involved shooting.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Trish Carter said the incident occurred about 10:38 p.m. when the unidentified officer was checking on a vehicle stopped on Broadway Avenue, near Stockton Hill Road.

Carter said the officer opened fire when the driver, Phillips, brandished a shotgun and pointed the weapon at him. She said the unidentified officer “fired several shots, striking and killing the female.”

The officer was not injured.

Carter said she had no information on why the vehicle was pulled over or why the officer was threatened.

The officer, who has been with the Kingman Police Department for seven years, was placed on administrative leave, standard procedure in officer-involved shootings in Arizona.
