NC shipwreck could date back to American Revolution — VIDEO
A team of scientists accidentally discovered a shipwreck off the coast of North Carolina that could date back to the American Revolution.
Researchers with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, WHOI, first spotted the sunken ship via sonar scan while aboard the Atlantis, a 274-foot oceanographic research vessel.
The team happened upon the submerged ship while looking for a device that collected deep-sea larvae on the east coast.
To get a closer look, the team used "Alvin," the same submersible used to capture the first images of Titanic in 1986.
"Using Alvin‘s arm, the team retrieved a wine bottle for the North Carolina Maritime Museums," the Cape Code Times reports. "Also found at the wreckage site was a pile of ship timbers, an unglazed pottery jug, a metal compass and red bricks."
The most notable find — a wooden sextant — was a celestial navigation tool often used in seafaring voyages in the late 18th century and beyond.
