No lines, no crowds, no fuss on first day of early voting

At a polling location inside a trailer at the Desert Crossing shopping center parking lot, dozens of people took advantage of the first day of early voting to cast their primary election ballots by early afternoon Saturday, said Edith Glass, assistant team leader for the site.

Glass called the early-voting process an excellent system that has been “so effective in the state of Nevada.”

The entire early voting process takes only minutes — especially during the primary election, she said. During the general election, the trickle of early voters in the primary elections turns into a torrent, said Glass, who has worked elections since the ’90s.

The air-conditioned trailer in the shopping center, located at the intersection of Desert Inn Road and Decatur Boulevard, offered 14 machines for voters, with an outdoor tent containing a voting machine on ground level to make access easier for disabled voters, Glass said. Each offers language choices of English, Spanish and Tagalog.

The first day of early voting before the June 14 primary election went smoothly, Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin said.

The convenience and quickness of early voting drew Charles Gregory, 50, to vote Saturday on his way home from work, he said. He said he always votes early and encourages others to do the same. “I’m not one to wait in line,” Gregory said.

John Redfield, 68, also took advantage of early voting at a trailer in the parking lot of the Las Vegas Athletic Club on Rainbow Boulevard south of Lake Mead Boulevard. Redfield said he likes voting early because he can beat the lines “at nice obscure places like this.”

Early voting locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through June 10.
