Obama to appoint Henderson man to Indian Law and Order Commission
President Barack Obama has announced his intent to appoint Henderson resident Ted Quasula to the newly established Indian Law and Order Commission.
Quasula, 60, is a member of the Hualapai Tribe in northern Arizona and general manager of the Grand Canyon Skywalk on the Hualapai Indian Reservation. He also serves as chairman of the Nevada Indian Commission.
He served as chief of police for the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe from 2003 to 2007. He also served for 26 years in the U.S. Department of the Interior’s office of law enforcement services within the Bureau of Indian Affairs, where he worked his way up from field criminal investigator to director of the national program.
Quasula, who is married to Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathleen Bliss, started his law enforcement career with the Flagstaff, Ariz., Police Department in 1972. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northern Arizona University.
The Indian Law and Order Commission will study tribal criminal justice systems, including issues related to jurisdiction over crimes on reservations, the relation between tribal jails and the federal prison system, juvenile justice systems and the Indian Civil Rights Act.
