Police rescue infant from car in desert
Las Vegas police rescued an infant Thursday who was left in a car overnight in the desert between Las Vegas and Sandy Valley.
Department spokesman Bill Cassell said the child was rescued about 3 p.m. The vehicle had become stuck about midnight.
The mother was driving the vehicle in the desert as a shortcut, Cassell said, and in the darkness took a wrong turn and became stuck.
“Somehow the child got locked in the car,” Cassell said. How that happened was unknown Thursday afternoon.
The mother left the vehicle for an unknown reason and tried to return to it. She could not find the car and then walked out of the desert to get help, Cassell said.
Her cell phone would not work. Police were notified Thursday afternoon and dispatched officers in search and rescue helicopters, who quickly found the vehicle, Cassell said.
The child appeared to be unharmed but was taken to a hospital as a precaution, Cassell said.
