Public services set for El Mundo founder Escobedo

A mortuary says public services for El Mundo newspaper founder and publisher Edmundo “Eddie” Escobedo Sr. will be today and Saturday.

The 77-year-old Escobedo, a Hispanic media and community pioneer, died last week in a hospital after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Escobedo is a former president of the National Association of Hispanic Publications. He also built a Hispanic business center and ran a Spanish-language movie theater.

He founded El Mundo in 1980.

The services are planned by Palm Mortuary & Cemetery, Downtown, 1325 N. Main St. A viewing will be from 1 to 11 p.m. today . The rosary will be said at 4 p.m. A second viewing will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Services will be after the Saturday viewing.
