Thousands celebrate Mormon pioneers
Thousands of people flocked to downtown Salt Lake City for the annual celebration of the arrival of Mormon pioneer settlers into the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847.
The Pioneer Day holiday officially kicked off at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Days of 47 Parade, one of the largest in the country. Some people camped out to get a good spot on the parade route.
The new settlers held the first parade in 1849, along with a rodeo. The official Days of ’47 celebration was created in 1943.
