Two more students bring guns to schools, putting year’s total at 11
Clark County School District police arrested two students for bringing loaded handguns on campus Monday.
Lt. Ken Young said that the arrests were unrelated and occurred at two high schools during lunch.
At Desert Pines High School, a 16-year-old girl was carrying a small caliber gun in her backpack, Young said. A male Arbor View student, 16, also was caught with a concealed small caliber gun in his backpack.
Police investigations are on-going in both cases, Young said. The gun-toting students were caught thanks to tips from other students. Both students were taken into custody without incident.
“That proves once again that our kids want to be in a safe environment,” Young said.
Monday’s incidents bring the number of guns recovered on district campuses this school year to 11. So far, that’s running well below last school year’s gun total of 56, Young said.
In addition to whatever legal consequences the students face, they’re also subject to expulsion for at least one year under the federal Gun-Free Schools Act of 1994.
