Editorial: Stadium plan

With a deadline for action looming at the end of the month, Gov. Brian Sandoval on Wednesday extended the life of a commission charged with setting priorities for tourism-related projects in Southern Nevada. It was a wise move.

The 11-member panel’s primary focus has been crafting a plan to build a state-of-the-art stadium that could potentially host not only special events and UNLV football games, but also attract the NFL’s Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas.

But at this point, major issues involving funding — which could exceed $2 billion — and location remain in flux. Providing committee members another two months to hash out the details and move this effort forward makes perfect sense.

In the interest of disclosure, the Review-Journal is owned by the family of Sheldon Adelson, chairman of Las Vegas Sands Corp., which would be an investor in the stadium.

The stadium deal, along with the potential relocation of the Raiders, would be a momentous economic stimulus for the city and entire region. The new deadline gives the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee more time to pore over all feasible options to ensure this project is done the right way.
