51s get solid start from Pinango, hold on to beat Grizzlies

Miguel Pinango pitched six strong innings, and the 51s survived a late Fresno Grizzlies rally for a 7-6 victory in Pacific Coast League play Tuesday in Fresno, Calif.

Las Vegas scored twice on wild pitches and Mitch Jones and Xavier Paul each drove in a run in the first to stake Pinango (5-9) to a 4-0 lead.

The right-hander gave up two runs on John Bowker’s homer and consecutive doubles by Scott McClain and Bonanza High School graduate Justin Leone in the bottom of the first. But Pinango shut out the Grizzlies on three hits in the next five innings, leaving with a 7-2 lead.

Fresno scored four times in the seventh, on pitcher Greg Miller’s throwing error and McClain’s two-run homer.

Dwayne Pollok pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

Paul went 4-for-5.
