51s’ late-game offensive outburst comes up short against Sky Sox

The 51s scored six runs over the final two innings, but gave up four runs in the bottom of the eighth in a 10-9 Pacific Coast League loss to the host Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Saturday.

Trailing 6-3 through seven innings, Las Vegas tied the game with a three-run eighth. Brian Bocock opened the inning with a double, Jonathan Diaz drew a one-out walk, and Mike McDade drove in Bocock and Diaz with a two-out, three-run homer.

But Colorado Springs (74-68) answered in the bottom of the inning, with Las Vegas (78-63) letting the first two batters reach on errors before Brandon Roberts’ RBI sacrifice fly and Wilkin Castillo’s RBI triple off reliever Bobby Korecky. Tim Wheeler added another sacrifice fly to score Castillo, and Matt McBride capped the surge with an RBI double to make it 10-6.

After singles from the 51s’ Luke Hughes and Chris Woodward to open the ninth, Tuffy Gosewisch belted a three-run homer off Sky Sox reliever Coty Woods to make it 10-9. Bocock and Anthony Gose followed with singles before Woods was yanked for Jason Bergman, who pitched through the jam to get all three outs.

The 51s wrap up the 2012 season with 12:05 p.m. games today and Monday against the host Sky Sox.
