51s overpower Beavers for fifth straight victory
Travis Snider hit four of the 51s’ eight doubles and drove in five runs Friday, and Adrian Martin shined in his second Triple-A start to power Las Vegas to a 14-1 Pacific Coast League victory over the Portland Beavers in Portland, Ore.
The 51s (52-55) have won five straight, outscoring their opponents 40-6 in that span.
On Friday, every Las Vegas starter contributed to the 51s’ 19-hit assault, six had multiple hits, and five scored multiple runs. Aaron Mathews and Jason Lane had solo homers for Las Vegas, which totaled twice as many extra-base hits (10) as Portland had hits (five).
Martin (1-0), in his fifth appearance since his promotion from Double-A New Hampshire, held the Beavers (46-61) to one run on three hits and no walks in 6 2/3 innings. He had given up six earned runs on 15 hits over 6 1/3 innings in his previous four games with the 51s.
Randy Ruiz and Angel Sanchez had three hits each for Las Vegas, with Ruiz lacing an RBI double and a two-run single.
Snider had an RBI double in the 51s’ four-run first inning, a two-run double in their three-run sixth, an RBI double in their four-run eighth and another RBI double in their two-run ninth.
Kevin Howard added two doubles and two RBIs.
Martin took a shutout into the seventh before allowing a leadoff triple to Craig Stansberry. Martin was removed after striking out the next two batters, and reliever Bill Murphy gave up a run-scoring infield single to Danny Putnam.
