76ers guard disarms hamhanded gunman

In a veritable Christmas Eve miracle, 76ers guard Lou Williams turned a would-be armed robber into a harmless Hamburglar in a matter of minutes.

Williams was stopped in his car in Philadelphia on Christmas Eve when he was approached by a man wielding a gun. But thanks to Williams’ work in the community, he managed to dissuade the gunman from robbing him — and then treated his would-be assailant to a merry meal at McDonald’s.

“Almost got robbed today,” Williams tweeted Saturday. “But homie said he recognized me and the good I’ve done for his hood so that made him change his mind … WOW.”

Williams, who scored 25 points to match his age in Monday’s season-opening loss at Portland, told the Philadelphia Daily News he was driving his car when the man began to approach with a gun drawn and then knocked on the driver’s window.

“There’s crime everywhere,” he said. “I was debating whether to pull off to help the guy. The gun was already out. He did all the talking, and we came up with a solution before I could really say much. I treated him to McDonald’s.”

Before dropping off the gunman, Williams reportedly told him, in a “Christmas Story” moment, be careful or “You’ll shoot your eye out.”

■ CHEATING CHEESEHEAD — It’s been said that living well is the best revenge, and for many residents of Green Bay, Wis., there are few things better in life than attending a Packers game at Lambeau Field.

Having tickets to Green Bay’s Christmas night rout of the rival Chicago Bears gave one female Packers fan a perfect way to exact revenge over her unfaithful boyfriend — in front of a national television audience, no less.

The smiling woman was shown during the game holding up a sign that read, “My cheating (ex) boyfriend is watching from couch instead.”

Sounds like this guy just lost his Wisconsin dream girl — a football fan with a sense of humor who can score tickets to Packers games.

■ CHEESEHEAD HISTORY — The idea for Cheeseheads, the novelty hats made popular by Packers fans, was inspired by Illinois residents, said Ralph Bruno, founder of Foamation, the company that manufactures the product.

“The people from Illinois always called us a bunch of ‘cheeseheads’ up in Wisconsin. When it first popped into my head, I was with a bunch of friends and we were about to go to a baseball game against the Chicago White Sox,” he said. “I was in the process of upholstering my mom’s couch. I used an extra piece of foam and fabricated it into the shape of a wedge to make it look like a block of cheese.”

Rumor has it Bruno actually hatched his cheesy idea when he discovered a block of cheese lodged in a couch cushion. As Bruno gnawed on the aged chunk of cheddar, he had a vision of a Cheesehead, which has evolved from the original wedge design into several others, including a baseball hat, a cowboy hat and a sombrero.
