Horse Racing: Today at Hollywood Park, June 16
TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
5 Ranulf – Ran well in career debut for Bob Baffert; was not bet that day at 8/1, will be way overbet this afternoon.
3 Kill Shot – FTS from Bruce Headley; has some bullet workouts on his tab and top speed rider in Edwin Maldonado.
Long Shot – 4 Advisory
Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Corinthian Melody – Has finished in the money four straight races; that consistency and class drop make her dangerous.
1 Salt Tequila Lime – Claimed by Doug O’Neill as a beaten favorite; not many horses get taken from Bob Baffert barn.
Long Shot – 6 No Fear Baby
Race 3 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $35,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
1 Bio Pro – Been nibbling with six straight in the money finishes; good resume but may show a lack of killer instinct.
4 This One’s for Mel – Peter Miller barn is running on all cylinders this meet; Irving Orozco has looked good so far.
Long Shot – 3 Warren’s Jeff G.
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
8 Big Note – Aggressive move up the ladder off a claim by Paul Aguirre; these are his friends still at this class level.
4 Stoneside – He is clearly losing a stride or two of late; Julio Canani is shoving this one down our throats.
Long Shot – 5 Guidopanzini
Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
9 Quality Plan – Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry so keep an eye on Aleander; has a history of backing the longer price.
5 A Red Tie Day – Showed good improvement in second career start for Carla Gaines; like that Rafael Bejarano remains loyal too.
Long Shot – 2 Airfoil
Race 6 – 6 furlongs, Purse $40,000, Claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Chapman’s Peak – Tepid chalk in a wide open scrum; big class drop where he lost by a head two races ago.
12 Peacenik – Key for me is Rafael Bejarano riding this Cody Autrey bomb; sometimes let the jock’s agent handicap for you.
Long Shot – 2 Truelee Scrappin
Race 7 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $54,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
7 Pulpit’s Express – Speedball was claimed in last by John Sadler; meet leading trainer looking to boost his total.
2 Boozer – Ran like a short horse in last first time facing winners; stretches out around 2-turns and gets Victor Espinoza.
Long Shot -4 On the Fence
Race 8 – 6 furlongs, $70,000 Desert Stormer Handicap, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Teddy’s Promise – Ron Ellis has an uncoupled entry; this gal airballed in last facing easier, repeat race will win this.
8 Include Me Out – Other Ellis is shortening up from 2-turn stakes for this; suspect her best stride will come late.
Long Shot – 9 Shumoos
Race 9 – 7 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
10 Whipstock – Ran into a buzzsaw race last out with a 44.3 half mile; today will be softer and he can rebound with his friends.
3 Beast of Bourbon – Ron Ellis barn is running well this meet, albeit short on wins; class dropper is well spotted to wake up.
Long Shot – 1 Suances Candy
Best Bet – 3 Teddy’s Promise (race 8)
Hollywood Park Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 19/3/$19.40; Long Shots, 9/2/$66.00; Best Bet, 1/1/$5.60
Hollywood Park Totals – 539/133/$840.60; Long Shots, 260/36/$414.80; Best Bets, 31/11/$49.80
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #2 Verrazano (6/5) in race 11 at Monmouth Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Ron the Greek ran third at Churchill Downs paying $3.20 to show. Stats – 97/63/$469.20; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
