TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $34,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
2 Hyena – Has run only one bad race, that in a stakes at Fairplex; her 3 races for a price tag have all been good.
1 O Happy Gray – Steep class drop running first time for a price tag; Mike Harrington takes the blinkers off, adds Corey Nakatani on.
Long Shot – 5 Swiss Bliss
Race 2 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
8 Coyote Road – In a race where the experienced starters are slowpokes, the FTs gain a measure because they’ve done nothing wrong.
3 Demand Success – Another FTS, this one from the Kristin Mulhall barn; need not be much to be competitive here.
Long Shot – 4 Bandini’s Rogue
Race 3 – 6 furlongs (turf), Purse $37,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Lanida – I’ll accept the evidence this one improved greatly off the claim by Doug O’Neill; banking on a repeat performance.
3 Miss Becca – Tepid chalk in a wide open affair; her two bad turf races where in stakes, this test is for a $40K price tag.
Long Shot – 6 There Is No Limit
Race 4 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
4 Vantage Point – Has the pedigree to be something good; suspect will improve a lot in second start for John Shirreffs.
6 Toruk Makto – His last two races at Del Mar were versus tougher foes; big shot to finally get his photo taken.
Long Shot – 3 Fit to Rule
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf), $100,000 Generous, 2-year-olds
4 Den’s Legacy – Bob Baffert charge gave a good account in the BC Juvenile Prevue; still has a high ceiling to reach.
9 Shining Cooper – Figures to be a good performer on turf or synthetics for Neil Drysdale; flattered when Power Broker won next out.
Long Shot – 2 Under Review
Race 6 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Axle – Showed an obvious preference for 1-turn races; suspect will be a productive closing claiming sprinter.
3 Run Charlie Run – Been away 10-months since Santa Anita; he has run well twice finishing third at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Long Shot – 2 Cold Bay
Race 7 – 6 furlongs (turf), Purse $45,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
6 Tap the Magic – Got an education first time out; suspect the Leparoux-Biancone team will try harder in this second career start.
12 Emmy’s Hall – Like backing Calder shippers, especially when they come to SoCal; let’s see the progress under Jerry Hollendorfer.
Long Shot – 3 Perfectamente
Race 8 – 6 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Moojha – Midwest shipper has run well twice over synthetics; speedball will play catch me if you can under Aaron Gryder.
4 Quizzical – I think Mark Glatt now knows she hates turf; will race over synthetics or dirt from now on.
Long Shot – 1 Tiz the Tide
Race 9 – 1 mile (turf), $100,000 Miesque, Fillies, 2-year-olds
5 Premier Steps – Shipped from the east by top NY trainer Chad Brown; interesting spot to make her U.S. debut.
8 Redressthebalance – Another Euro invader, also racing first time on Lasix; at least we know this 2-YO won’t bleed.
Long Shot – 4 Miss Empire
Race 10 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
13 Stone Hot – Huge red flag class drop to face much easier; the one to beat if things are OK under the hood.
7 Sparkle Joel – Regained some confidence in last when dropping down in class; moves in from a parking lot post 13.
Long Shot – 2 Ithoughtipaidyou
Best Bet – 4 Den’s Legacy (race 5)
Hollywood Park Friday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/7/$46.20; Long Shots, 10/1/$6.20; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Hollywood Park Totals – 164/44/$296.60; Long Shots, 84/11/$130.00; Best Bets, 10/4/$17.80
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #5 Hymn Book (6/1) in race 8 at Aqueduct. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Economic Summit ran out at Aqueduct. Stats – 173/119/$1,037.00; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
