Carp named Nevada Sportswriter of Year

Steve Carp of the Review-Journal has been selected Nevada’s Sportswriter of the Year for 2007, adding to his previous honors in 2000 and 2004.

Carp, 51, was chosen by members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. The awards ceremony will be May 5 in Salisbury, N.C., where the organization’s Hall of Fame is located.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Carp has been in Las Vegas since 1988, first at the Las Vegas Sun, and since 1999 at the Review-Journal. He was the primary beat reporter for UNLV basketball and national college basketball at the newspapers from 1990 to 2006 and now covers boxing, professional basketball, golf and tennis for the R-J.

Carp has won numerous writing awards from the Nevada Press Association, the California State Press Association and Sigma Delta Chi, the Society of Professional Journalists. He is vice president of the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Las Vegas 51s broadcaster Russ Langer was chosen as Nevada Sportscaster of the Year for the third time (also 2003 and 2005).

The national winners were Jim Nantz of CBS Sports for Sportscaster of the Year and Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe for Sportswriter of the Year.
