San Diego, which lost star safety Eric Weddle to Baltimore, is involved in a troublesome contract dispute with defensive end Joey Bosa, the No. 3 pick in the draft.
Philip Rivers passed for 4,792 yards last season, second in the league to Drew Brees. But Rivers needs better protection from his offensive line and more production from second-year running back Melvin Gordon.
