Green Valley pulls out win

David Martin wasn’t the first choice to close out the game, or even the second.
But after Green Valley’s top two relievers — Daniel Levine and Josh Bray — struggled, Martin ultimately slammed the door on Coronado on Thursday.
Martin came on with the tying run on base with no outs in the bottom of the seventh and retired three of the four batters he faced as the Gators escaped with an 11-10 road win.
“David Martin came in and put out the fire, basically,” Green Valley coach Nick Garritano said. “We were struggling to throw strikes with the two guys who have done a great job for us all year.”
Levine and Bray had combined for nine saves entering Thursday’s game, but both struggled with control, combining for three walks and four wild pitches.
“They’ve been our guys,” Garritano said. “We definitely went to our guys, and they didn’t have it. And then we went to a guy that’s sort of been behind the scenes a little bit, and he did a great job.”
The Gators (21-3, 7-1 Southeast) looked to be in trouble early, trailing the Cougars 3-1 entering the fifth. But Green Valley sent 13 batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring nine runs to take a 10-3 lead.
Matt Harrison’s three-run homer put the Gators up 5-3, and Green Valley added five runs with the help of two errors, a walk and a hit batter.
The Gators also got RBI singles from Jordan Van Hoosier and Nick Melino, who each had two hits in the inning.
Green Valley led 11-4 going into the bottom of the sixth, but Coronado (11-8, 5-4) rallied for six runs on just two hits. Ryan McIntyre’s grand slam was the big blow as the Cougars pulled within a run.
“That’s this league,” Garritano said. “This league is tough. And it’s a credit to Coronado’s program and kids. They fought and fought and fought.”
Van Hoosier and Melino each had three hits for Green Valley, and Kevin Stethem added a solo home run.
McIntyre, Tim Arthur and Justin Souza-Grenier each had two hits for the Cougars.
