Horse Racing
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
Galatin’s Run – There is an advantage to race experience; second start off a year hiatus, showed some ability.
Flagship – Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry; this guy figures to be way overbet, thus keep an eye then on Donato.
Long Shot – Donato
Race 2 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $62,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Timezone – Has shown a lot of ability in 3 career starts; like that he’ll have a speed target in Zilla.
Zilla – Chance to be lone speed, the most dangerous play in racing; she has a tendency to give it up late.
Long Shot – Soft Show Shuffle
Race 3 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Squeeze Me Tight – Ran well off the claim by Mike Mitchell; she slides down one class level, that may be enough.
Ultra Awesome – Claimed by Tim Yakteen off a solid victory; she is in top form as she climbs the claiming ladder.
Long Shot – Dreams Afleet
Race 4 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
He Be Fire N Ice – Ran a winning race in last for the state bred MSW; if he improves one step, watch out.
Storddim – Doug O’Neill has an uncoupled entry, so caveat emptor; this colt ran fairly well in his debut.
Long Shot – Jailbird Jimmy
Race 5 – 1 mile, Purse $16,000, Claiming $8,000, 4-year-olds and up
Mind the Minister – Ran evenly off the claim in last for Oscar Garcia; hires the aggressive P Val to put him into the race.
James Prior – Tepid favorite draws the rail to save all the ground; drops in class to face some of his friends.
Long Shot – Mr. Rancho Vista
Race 6 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $44,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
L’Enchanteresse – Doug O’Neill has been in the headlines lately for all the wrong reasons; yet the barn remains red hot.
Sky Chant – Speedy sort figures to try for the same trip as Zilla in race 2; simple tactics for Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot – Cosmic Angel
Race 7 – 7 furlongs, $100,000 Real Good Deal, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds
Goggles McCoy – Unbeaten in 3 career starts, he’s only 15 wins behind Zenyatta; Russell Baze closing in on 11,000 wins himself.
Very Fair – Like the turn back in distance from turf route to elongated sprint; outside post aids him in clocking the speed.
Long Shot – High Success
Race 8 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
Cactus Breeze – Interesting Turf Paradise invader has faced winners only; Robert Troeger has done well from a small sample.
Wild and True – Was bet in debut and ran well in the late stages; Martin Garcia takes over for the injured Joe Talamo.
Long Shot – Swiss A
Best Bet – Goggles McCoy (race 7)
Del Mar Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/2/$13.80; Long Shots, 8/1/$6.60; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals – 254/60/$398.80; Long Shots, 125/17/$188.80; Best Bets, 15/5/$27.40
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY – #7 Song of Broadway (7/2) in race 4 at Saratoga. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Secret Getaway ran second at Monmouth Park paying $4.20 to place and $3.00 to show. Stats – 144/102/$779.40
