HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 3:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
Chapman’s Peak – FTS from John Sadler has shown speed in the a.m.; like that leading rider Joel Rosario is up.
Good to Go – Bruce Headley has an uncoupled 3-horse entry, so caveat emptor; this one had the most recent race.
Long Shot – Society At Large
Race 2 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $57,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Blue Maiden – A quality import grass runner usually holds a big class edge; Joel Rosario had choices, lands here.
Hemera – Dead late closer figures to get an excellent ride from Corey Nakatani; question is the talent level of the horse.
Long Shot – Arte Viva
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
Black Coyote – Outran his 20/1 odds in career debut; showed good tactical speed and can win with simple improvement.
Inverness Cape – Bob Baffert babies are always to be respected; you’ll have an edge of seeing the tote board action.
Long Shot – Bridging
Race 4 – 6 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
Engine Sixty Nine – P Val is winning a lot of races by letting a natural speed horse roll; most jocks take a hold early.
Adriatic Moon – The main danger to sweep the field late; Rafael Bejarano will sit in arrears and attack late.
Long Shot – Gotmymojoworkin
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $62,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Late Cuddle – Superb U.S. debut, was 6/1 and ran like odds on; question if she’ll bounce or not, was super impressive though.
Zilla – Speedball loses Mike Smith to Timezone, but can still motor; key is if P Val on Enumclaw Girl challenges early.
Long Shot – Prytania
Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $54,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Our Road Scholar – Like the turn back in distance from route to sprint; enough speed to stalk the early pace.
Dani Reese – Ran like a short horse last time off a 7-month hiatus; has only one direction to go so expect improvement.
Long Shot – There Goes Gee Gee
Race 7 – 1 mile, $100,000 El Cajon, 3-year-olds
Lions Story – The maestro Jerry Hollendorfer has an uncoupled entry; this is the longer odds horse who will run late.
Goggles McCoy – Logical chalk is the other half of the Hollendorfer entry; unknown is going 2-turns for the first time.
Long Shot – Distorted Economy
Race 8 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Maiden claiming $62,500, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Intentional – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; Victor Espinoza had choices, lands here.
Dearly Concerned – Rafael Bejarano picks up the mount from Espinoza; was well bet in career debut for Jerry Hollendorfer.
Long Shot – Hanakkuh
Best Bet – Blue Maiden (race 2)
Del Mar Thursday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/2/$14.20; Long Shots, 7/1/$7.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals – 526/126/$827.20; Long Shots, 262/43/$434.00; Best Bets, 32/13/$59.40
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY – #7 Funcia (7/2) in race 11 at Monmouth Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Snow Top Mountain ran second at Saratoga paying $3.40 to place and $2.60 to show. Stats – 159/114/$856.20
