HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $44,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
Timbavati – Rough trip in debut, plenty of excuses; big rider switch to Rafael Bejarano for the money shot.
Royce – Exits a key race in debut when third to a couple of good colts; one step improvement puts him right there.
Long Shot – Imperial Pride
Race 2 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $44,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Aprisa Luna – Big run in debut to lose a neck; note she doesn’t use Lasix giving an edge to her opposition.
Miss Pleasant – Richard Mandella barn appears to be waking up from slumber; exits a key race at Hollywood.
Long Shot – Khendum
Race 3 – 1 mile, $100,000 San Rafael, 3-year-olds
Conveyance – Perfect in 2 starts, no tries 2-turns for the first time; pedigree suggests and outstanding miler.
Domonation – His pedigree and style lend itself to a distance of ground; best stride will come in the lane.
Long Shot – Via Verde
Race 4 – 1 mile, Purse $14,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
Changing – A. C. Avila barn continues to earn paychecks every time out; cagey veteran appears ready for best effort.
Heroi Do Bafra – Red flag class dropper is a little too obvious for me; horses are not given away, not in this economy.
Long Shot – Rummysecret War
Race 5 – 7 furlongs, $150,000 Santa Ynez, Fillies, 3-year-olds
She’s Funomenal – Only scratched the surface of her ability; bred to race all day, she needs to settle and make one run.
Franny Freud – NY invader has crushed her Gotham bred rivals; she fared well in Canada, but imploded in the Frizette.
Long Shot – Amen Hallelujah
Race 6 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $32,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds and up
Cavanal – Ran a winning race for this class in last; subtle class drop can only help, clearly the one to beat.
Major General – Rafael Bejarano had choices and sticks with Mike Mitchell; expect improvement second off a layoff.
Long Shot – Skellytown
Race 7 – 1 1/16th miles, $150,000 San Fernando Handicap, 4-year-olds
Mythical Power – Draw a line thru the Malibu and his reseme looks strong; needed the race off an 8-month hiatus.
Papa Clem – Logical chalk has the strongest resume, but hasn’t won many; last photo came in the Arkansas Derby.
Long Shot – Viscount
Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $46,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Surfer Girl – Just missed in impressive U.S. debut last March; it was down the hill, which shows she can handle the turns.
Our Say Oui – Draw a line thru her synthetics debut; she is much better on grass, good enough to attract Garrett Gomez.
Long Shot – Rosey de Megeve
Race 9 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Purse $15,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Sarabella Mia – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; like the turn back in distance.
We Are One – Must draw in, but will be tough regardless; parking lot post with a short run to the first turn.
Long Shot – Glory Forever
Best Bet – She’s Funomenal (race 5)
Santa Anita Friday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/2/$9.80; Long Shots, 8/1/$11.20; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals – 261/68/$457.20; Long Shots, 130/18/$186.80; Best Bets, 16/8/$34.80
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY – #7 Pedrolino (3/1) in race 3 at Gulfstream Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, January Gent ran out at Aqueduct. Stats – 16/10/$62.60
