HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $51,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Softly Singing – Ran a winning race in defeat is an overused cliche; it fits with this filly’s debut, she ran great.
Multifaceted – FTS from Eoin Harty is bred to be a nice horse; like that hot riding Garrett Gomez is up.
Long Shot – Harissa
Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
Scottish Diamond – Rail post forced his hand early last time; parking lot post here will allow him to sit and stalk.
Northern Soldier – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low class level; can be effective stalking the pace.
Long Shot – Coronel Moldes
Race 3 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Box Office Queen – Been knocking at the door, facing the weakest field of her life; bugboy takes the weight off.
Smartysideup – FTS has the pedigree to outrun his 20/1 morning line; unknown in a race full of slowpokes.
Long Shot – Inca’s Flight
Race 4 – 1 mile, Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
Yankee Station – Raced too close to the pace in last, no closing kick; Garrett Gomez will take back and make one run.
Capture the Call – Speedball could get loose early, so watch it; will provide the target for all of the closers.
Long Shot – Lockford
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $50,000, Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds
Dream Now – Races first time for a price tag; big rider switch to Rafael Bejarano, still getting his sea legs.
Del Conte – Logical chalk exits a key race in last; tactical speed to sit a trip off the speed, One Call.
Long Shot – One Call
Race 6 – 1 mile, Purse $44,000, Claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
Gandolf – Showed nice improvement off the claim by Doug O’Neill; should be able to handle the 2-turn stretch out.
Headache – His comfort level is $40K like today; main question is handling the 2-turn on the stretch out.
Long Shot – Saint Paul
Race 7 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $51,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
Runaway Bandido – Was closing fast of all in last, a key race; if he improves one step, he’ll be right there.
Single Prince – Not much difference for Cal-breds between MSW and $40K claiming; will provide the speed and target.
Long Shot – Twenty Hawks
Race 8 – 1 3/8th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), $250,000 Del Mar Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
Racketeer – Hasn’t won in 2-years, but I loved his prep in the Brubaker; figures to be 30/1 odds or higher.
Spring House – Tepid chalk disappointed in last as the 1/2 chalk; key was there was no pace for him to chase.
Long Shot – Artiste Royal
Race 9 – 6 furlongs, Purse $37,000, Claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Martini Mixer – Beaten favorite last time; claimed by Jack Carava, this would be a fitting goodbye to the meet.
Steam Iron – Upset the favorite last time on the square; parking lot post allows her to stalk the pace.
Long Shot – Good Night Gyrene
Race 10 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $57,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Patriotic Soldier – Could not overcome a blistering pace last time on grass; should sit closer to the pace in here.
The Bat Signal – Claimed by Eric Kruljac and spotted for a quick ROI; has tons of back class to compete today.
Long Shot – Steady Demand
Best Bet – Softly Singing (race 1)
