TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Charlie and Chris – Ran evenly in first start for John Sadler off a 2-month hiatus; expect better today.
Scofield Barracks – Ran like a flat tire in last off the claim by Doug O’Neill; has much more talent than that.
Long Shot – His Boy Elroy
Race 2 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $44,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Mysterious Marissa – There is not a more evenly matched field than this all day; will sit a stalking trip.
Doughnut – Speedy sort should take advantage of the turf rail out 14 feet; Jose Valdivia, be aggressive.
Long Shot – There Goes Gee Gee
Race 3 – 1 mile, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Prophetise – Ran a winning race for this low class level in last; repeat try gets his picture taken.
Not Unusual – Guess what, an Unusual Heat not trained by Barry Abrams; offers good value at 6/1 odds.
Long Shot – Jet Set Lass
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, $150,000 Best Pal, 2-year-olds
Lookin At Lucky – Bob Baffert colt was flattered when Sterling Outlook won easily next out; bred to be a top router, not a sprinter.
Classical Slew – Could not handle nice filly Necessary Evil, who was upset yesterday; appears to be the best of the rest.
Long Shot – Smiling Tiger
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
Cedros – I am convinced John Glenney will win a couple Del Mar races at huge odds; ran better than looked in last.
B’s Lucky Strike – Dead late closer should see plenty of pace to chase; Joel Rosario keeping the mojo going.
Long Shot – Hidden Blessing
Race 6 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $51,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Softly Singing – FTS from the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; working fast and bred to be quick.
Champagne d’Oro – Maiden exits stakes for this much easier spot; should be chugging fast in the stretch.
Long Shot – The Great Atlantic
Race 7 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $60,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Birdie Birdie – Julio Canani filly broke her MSW at Del Mar last year; appears prepped for a big effort today.
Royal Fortune – Did everything but win last time; lost to a quality foe in Dreamalong, will be heard from.
Long Shot – Win Allison Win
Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles, $300,000 Clement L. Hirsch, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Zenyatta – She would have to regress a lot to lose; drops 6-pounds in weight off winning the Vanity, as if her talent isn’t enough.
Life Is Sweet – Good third in Gold Cup despite a wide trip chasing a slow pace; she scared Zenyatta, a little, when second in the Milady.
Long Shot – Anabaa’s Creation
Race 9 – 1 mile, Purse $24,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds and up
Bad Boy – Appeared to be claimed specifically for this meet; back class and a nice win here last summer.
Fantasy Free – Just missed last time in a solid try; he appears capable of repeating the effort today.
Long Shot – High Stakes Silver
Race 10 – 7 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Legend of My Own – Big finish last time when a stride late; second start off an 8-month hiatus.
