TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
Fu Peg He Rat – Dead late closer runs consistently well, not fast enough lately to win; facing a softer group.
A Lil Dumaani – Logical chalk is a consistent 10-of-15 in the money; tactical speed to protect his inside post.
Long Shot – Empire House
Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Msty Aly – Can be the most dangerous bet in horse racing, lone speed; simple tactics of catch me if you can.
Change My Luck – Finally found her comfort last time; closed well on the drop in class, fits well tonight.
Long Shot – Paddlin Mud
Race 3 – 1 1/2 miles (turf), $150,000 Sunset Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
Black Astor – Early speed wins more marathon races than you think; Joe Talamo can set whatever pace he wants.
Spring House – Logical chalk will be at the mercy of pace; he does not run until the last quarter mile.
Long Shot – Obrigado
Race 4 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $12,000, Claiming $8,000, 3-year-olds and up
Sonic West – Jack Van Berg is sitting on a goose egg; he’s got 2 shots to win, here and in race 6.
Frankelstein – One of many class droppers; there hasn’t been much claiming lately, taxes and the economy.
Long Shot – Push Send
Race 5 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 2-year-olds
Seeuat Sticknstein – Figures to sit a trip and can pick up the pieces late; like that he takes the blinkers off.
Ranger Heartley – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; early speed to spare.
Long Shot – Catch My Tale
Race 6 – 7 furlongs, Purse $11,000, Claiming $8,000, 3-year-olds and up
Crimson Star – Might run better if he has a target, like Trilliant; Rafael Bejarano makes the difference late.
Trilliant – He’s won 3-times at lower class levels; clearly the one to beat, figures to get way overbet.
Long Shot – Quityerbellyaching
Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $46,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Streakin Excess – Tough looking entry from Ted West; don’t expect Garrett Gomez and Victor Espinoza to duel.
Church Avenue – Good looking debut, slow early but closed in stride late; figures to keep improving.
Long Shot – Moon Racer
Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $50,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
Dover Street Art – Was scratched the other day for this easier spot; like that Doug O’Neill hires Garrett Gomez.
Enriched – Logical chalk has won two straight by daylight; steps up in class to face tougher open company.
Long Shot – Axel Foley
Race 9 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $16,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Action in May – Let’s see if Garrett Gomez can win the meet finale; dead late closer will be flying late.
Joking Sam – Ran OK in last, his first for a claiming price; figures to move forward facing a motley crew.
Long Shot – Personality Kid
Best Bet – Streakin Excess entry (race 7)
Hollywood Park Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/6/$29.00; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.60
